Tip of the spear:

Baidu launches GPT-4.5 rival at 1% the cost LINK

  • Baidu has introduced two new foundation models, ERNIE 4.5 and ERNIE X1, claiming ERNIE 4.5 is significantly cheaper than OpenAI's GPT-4.5, costing just 1% of its price.

  • ERNIE X1 is designed for advanced reasoning and understanding tasks, excelling in Chinese Q&A, logical reasoning, and complex calculations, while being priced at half the cost of DeepSeek R1.

  • The models are accessible through ERNIE Bot's website, with plans for integration into Baidu's services and availability via APIs on Baidu AI Cloud's platform for developers.

Apple plans to remove ports from iPhones LINK

  • Apple is reportedly planning to introduce the iPhone 17 Air, which may become the company's first port-free smartphone, relying entirely on wireless charging and data syncing through iCloud.

  • This shift to a completely portless design could streamline the device and set a trend for other manufacturers to follow, similar to Apple's past elimination of the headphone jack.

  • Despite considering a portless design, Apple has opted to retain the USB-C port for the iPhone 17 Air to avoid conflicts with European Union regulations, while other models in the 17 lineup are also expected to maintain USB-C connectivity.

Alphabet spins off Starlink competitor Taara LINK

  • Taara, a light-based internet project, has spun off from Alphabet's moonshot incubator X to become an independent entity, aiming to compete with Starlink in connecting rural regions.

  • Alphabet will keep a minority stake in Taara, which has also gained investment from Series X Capital, with the company currently operating in 12 countries and employing around two dozen people.

  • Taara's technology transmits data using a narrow light beam between terminals, offering up to 20 gigabits per second over 20 kilometers, and is cheaper and faster to deploy than fiber optics.

SpaceX launches astronauts for long-awaited International Space Station crew swap LINK

  • SpaceX launched four astronauts on a mission to the International Space Station, which will facilitate the return of Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore after a nine-month stay.

  • The Crew-10 mission involves SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft docking with the ISS, where the new crew will temporarily overlap with the current team before Williams and Wilmore return to Earth around March 19.

  • The mission gained attention due to the extended stay of Williams and Wilmore, initially sent via Boeing’s Starliner, which faced technical issues, delaying their return and leading to Musk's unverified claims about political interference.

Prompt of the week:

Create a comprehensive meal-preparation guide tailored specifically to a high-protein, low-carb diet. The guide should clearly outline:

  1. Weekly Meal Plan:

    • Detail meals for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks for seven days, emphasizing variety, convenience, and nutritional balance.

  2. Shopping List:

    • Provide an organized grocery list categorizing ingredients by proteins, vegetables, healthy fats, seasonings, and staples.

  3. Meal Preparation Schedule:

    • Recommend a structured prep schedule (e.g., Sunday and mid-week check-in) highlighting efficient cooking and storage techniques to maintain freshness and convenience.

  4. Recipes and Variations:

    • Offer quick, flavorful recipes for each meal that can be batch-cooked or easily reheated.

    • Include adaptable ingredient substitutions to accommodate taste preferences or ingredient availability.

  5. Nutritional Guidelines:

    • Provide tips on portion sizes, macro balancing, and optimal protein-to-carb ratios suitable for sustained energy and mental clarity throughout a busy workweek.

  6. Storage and Convenience Tips:

    • Suggest best practices for packaging, refrigeration, and reheating meals to preserve taste, texture, and nutritional quality.

Ensure your guide considers the time constraints and lifestyle needs of a busy professional, maintaining efficiency and practicality at every step.
